SSM’s initiative for Addressing Drought situation:

1.       Farmers of Nanded District are experiencing an impact of climate change for the past 3 years. Delay in onset of monsoon and its early cessation, high intensity and erratic rainfall, long dry spells, frequent droughts and hailstorm etc, together posing the great threat to whole agriculture production and productivity.
This year, the region has witnessed just 22% of average annual rainfall in two & half months. Turning the situation from bad to worse, experts fear difficult days ahead, IMD’s forecast revealed that it would be the biggest drought in the last six years. Farmers, consecutively facing such situation for the almost decade, now feel impaired with a broken the back.  Beginning of this year was very hopeful, as the monsoon has come at the right time and in the right quantity, farmers were very happy. They have sown each and every corner of their field by taking loans from private money lenders and banks. There was something different in nature's mind after the initial good spell. There was no rain again for two & a half month.  Due to monsoon deficit, a majority of the Kharif crops have been ruined.  Only Pigeon pea (Tur ) and cotton managed to endure but suffered a lot by pest and diseases due to long dry spell. Mentally, farmers are not ready to spend more money on it. There won’t be any possibility for rabi crops, if the situation continues the same till August end.

Meeting with local NGOs: To address this drought situation, on 21st August SSM organized a meeting with  SHGs from Nanded district and the groups came from Biloli, Mukhed, Kandhar, Loha, Deglur, Naygaon, and Dharmabad blocks.  During the whole discussion, its understood that MGNREGA  can be the best option for sustainability of farmers and landless people. Through MGNREG, villagers can earn wages and develop best conservation management around their villages. SSM’s Chairperson Mr. Pramod Deshmukh addressed that meeting and added his inputs, how this scheme would be the benefit for Villages.
