Lets join us to overcome on Drought situation and save Farmers

Drought!  The Nanded district of Marathwada region has been experiencing Drought from past 3 years. The situation of Food, Fodder and Water has going worse day by day. The Indian Express has published an article “Marathwada: India’s emerging suicide capital” dated 13th September 2015. Dry-land agriculture is the only source of livelihood for the people in the Nanded district. The long dry spells left the farms unproductive in the area. The investment in the farms without income from the last 3 years hampered farmers’ economics very badly.
The key issues that needed to be addressed are Food, Fodder and Water. For Food, we have managed to support the farmers with seed and fertilizers for the rabbi season and for water we are talking with the Government for Drinking water supply wherever necessary.
But, there is another serious problem battling by both farmers as well as livestock is fodder unavailability. Due to very low land holding capacity (2 to 3 acres), farmers are engaged in livestock conservation as a subsidiary occupation for livelihood. Continuous drought badly affects fodder availability. The rate of dry fodder touches its high.  Either to sell out or give up their livestock is the only way to save their animals against famine starvation. There are no fodder camps, fodder banks in the region, Government programs like fodder development program have failed to yield result due to water scarcity. Farmers’ fodder stock is near about to finish.  Now, they are not in a position to shell out money for fodder purchase or arrangements.  Someone have to make arrangements of fodder for the survival of livestock.
For the situation, ‘Hydroponics’ is the only ray of hope. We can produce green and nutritious fodder at home, in a small space, very less time, less water without soil in fewer efforts. Farmers can save 40 to 50% cost on fodder. One tray of 2 KG Maize seed can produce 10-12 KG of green fodder in 7 days. We are continuously arranging farmers’ group training program to make them understand the technique.
The major expenditure in the unit is plastic trays. One tray costs Rs. 500/- and one farmer needs 4 trays at least, means Rs. 2000/- per farmer. If we support them with the trays, they can make other arrangements easily and save their animals from starvation. Thus helping the community to overcome the situation, we need to support them a unit of the Hydroponics.
We request you to lend a kind hand to save the livestock in the drought situation. Your small support of Rs. 2000/- can make a big difference. Come, Donate now!
